Station to Station is David Bowie's masterpiece and my all time favorite album. It takes its sweet ass time to get started, with an intro that's two minutes of train atmospherics but once the bridge comes in it turns into a funk rock banger with the best melody of all time and a kick ass guitar solo. It feels like what Young Americans was building up to.
"Station to Station" is one of the greatest songs of all time, but so are the other five songs here. "Golden Years" is a wonderful and happy song on an otherwise less-than-cheery album, "Word on a Wing" is a gorgeous song that contains some of Bowie's very best and most evocative lyrics, "TVC15" is a song about a TV eating his girlfriend (doesn't get much better than that), "Stay" is a surprisingly relatable song (it's nice to know that even David Bowie isn't sure when a girl wants to fuck him), and "Wild is the Wind" is easily his best cover.
The Clash's debut is the greatest punk rock album ever made. The Ramones may have come first and the Sex Pistols may have been more popular, but the Clash made music that mattered. Never Mind the Bollocks was entertaining shock-rock that wasn't meant to be anything but provocative and appealing to teenagers; and the Ramones were content with the fact that they only ever made one song, they just made it over and over again and it was a damn good song. The Ramones held no merit beyond their catchiness and influence - which admittedly is a lot of merit.
I'm only bringing up the Sex Pistols and the Ramones along with the Clash because the three of them seem to be by far the most popular punk rock bands of the mid to late 70s. But the Clash also have them beat when it comes to their music. Did the Pistols or the Ramones ever make a song as good as "In Hammersmith Palais?" Nah. But that's barely the best song here; all 42 minutes kick ass. One of the most consistent albums ever made.
While most would have picked an album from their numbered series as their best, I see Houses of the Holy as Led Zeppelin's masterpiece. Led Zeppelin wouldn't touch the beauty of "Rain Song" again, or the atmosphere of "No Quater," or the pure Zeppelin-ness of "Over the Hills and Far Away" - their very best song. For me, Houses of the Holy is the quintessential summer album and listening to it always puts me in a brighter mood.
"Phoney Beatle mania has bitten the dust" is the most badass lyric ever written and it sets the tone for this alt rock masterpiece. Two LPs worth of brilliant songwriting, amazing riffs and killer hooks carry the forever relevant political lyrics. There isn't a song here I could go without (except maybe "Four Horsemen"). "Train in Vain" remains the best breakup song ever written. Also, Elvis is a cunt for stealing these guys' artwork.
I don't mean to seem im14andthisisdeep, but The Wall is deep and intensely relatable. Often times with movies there will be details you don't catch on the first viewing, but this really isn't something that happens with music (unless you don't pay attention to lyrics). But on The Wall, every time I listen to it I still notice things I hadn't noticed before, lyrics or moments that further develop the very fully realized concept and put me in awe at its geniusness. It may come across as whiny, corny, and overblown at times but that's just part of the charm.
Listening to it now, 1977's Lust for Life almost sounds like the blueprint for all early 2000s indie rock bands. If you'd told me this album was made at the same time as bands like the Strokes and Interpol were getting started, I would believe you.
All nine tracks here exemplify what rock n' roll should be (although I don't know why Iggy wants us to really know that he's been fucked in the ear). David Bowie's backing vocals on "Tonight" may be the most eargasmic thing I've ever heard.
In 1979, three years after the Sex Pistols' only album, John "Johnny Rotten" Lydon made his masterpiece. Metal Box / Second Edition is mostly improvized, underwritten, under-produced, disorganized, repetitive, funny, depressing, disturbing, noisy, and long; all making for the most intense atmosphere in any album ever made. And while none of that paints a very pleasant picture, every time I listen to this album I like it more than I previously had.
Bowie's first hints of the art rock greatness he'd get into are here, doing everything from hard rock to lounge music and doing it all brilliantly (yes, even his cover of "Let's Spend the Night Together"); and "Time" remains one of his greatest achievements, with its odd verses and very grandiose chorus.
Side note: Why is it that when a song is titled "Time," you know that it's going to be fucking amazing? From Bowie to Pink Floyd to Tom Waits, it seems that every "Time" is one of the best songs ever made.
During the recording of Station to Station Bowie lived on a diet of just red peppers, he wouldn't drink anything but milk, was consuming the maximum amount of cocaine that is humanly possible, was hiding his piss in the fridge out of fear that wizards in the sewer would steal it, was drawing shit on floors in attempts to summon spirits, was constantly hallucinating, was never sleeping, was severely depressed, was in extreme fear that Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page was going to kill him, he publicly endorsed Nazism (even going as far as subtlety writing about it in his music), and strangest of all, he claims to remember none of it.
He proclaimed that "L.A. ought to be wiped off the face of the fucking Earth" (hard to disagree with him there), and left to Berlin with his close friend Iggy Pop. Together, in just one year (1977) they got clean and made four all time great albums, the first of which being "Low."
With Brian Eno on keyboards he helped make this album even more futuristic than his masterpiece "Another Green World" from two years prior. "Low" is lyrically sparse but filled with captivating music. "A New Career in a New Town" has a sense of beauty and hope like no other song despite not having any lyrics and it's impossible to deny the infectious greatness of "Sound and Vision."
Physical Graffiti is one of the all time great double albums, containing 84 minutes of Led Zeppelin. I don't know what more one could ask for. Physical Graffiti is LZ's darkest, most epic, and most varied album, with art rock, prog rock, hard rock, and folk, all done to great success; with the eastern influenced "Kashmir" being one of the bands very best songs (and the one the men themselves would like you to remember them most for).
The outtakes from previous albums that are included here make you wonder why they were ever cut in the first place - but only for the most part, because the fourth side contains songs like "Black Country Woman" and "Sick Again," songs that are weird (not in a good way) and really didn't need to be here. That said, this has 75 minutes of great music that I've sat through front to back, many, many times.
The best songs on "Heroes" are definitely better than the best songs on Low. The second half of the title track may be my favorite three minutes of music of all time. I don't think I've ever heard any song that matches the passion in his vocals on that song.
The rest of the first side is absolute greatness as well. I would say it was incredibly ahead of it's time, but it honestly doesn't sound like anything else after it either and if it came out today I wouldn't say it was dated - it just really doesn't sound like 1977.
What makes "Heroes" lesser than Low is that most of its instrumental tracks on its second side feel somewhat aimless. But it goes out with a bang, closing it off with "The Secret Life of Arabia," one of Bowie's very best songs and a perfect trailer for Lodger. Oh, and I almost forgot, Robert Fripp's guitar work. Fuck it's great.
Siren catches Roxy Music at the perfect cross between their later new romantic work and their early glam rock work, and is the best from Roxy Music 1.0 and maybe their best period.
Some of Roxy Music's early work slightly suffers from all the songs being so wacky and unstructured that they begin to sound undistinguishable, and the wackiness is toned down here ever so slightly but it's for the benefit. Every song on this album is distinct (and great) and "Love is the Drug" is nearly as good as "More Than This."
There wasn't much else that sounded like Unknown Pleasures in the 70s. Atmospheric, passionate, and full of genuine anger and sadness, this was one of my favorite albums when I was most depressed. And has a guitar ever been better at creating an atmosphere as Sumner's work on this album?
Hunky Dory is Bowie's first truly great album. It opens with the classic "Changes," and continues the greatness with epics ("Life on Mars?") and memorable wacky folk tunes (the majority of the album).
Sounds weird saying it for Animals out of all albums, but this is a surprisingly uplifting album. After 40 minutes of Roger Waters ranting about businessmen and assholes and people who can't think for themselves, in the end he admits that none of it really matters all that much and shit's gonna be alright.
Animals is an album that always managed to make me feel better by presenting something depressing that I could relate to and taking me on journey that ends somewhat happily, leaving me somewhat happy.
The most overlooked album from the Wetton trilogy is also the best. Starless and Bible Black is shockingly beautiful. Every time I hear "Trio" I imagine myself in the future in pure, peaceful happiness with every feeling I've ever wanted to have. Any time I want to feel better, this is one of my go to albums. Also, I don't know why but I chuckle every time I hear the album's very first words "Health food faggot."
It's aight.
The beginnings of punk rock can be seen everywhere on this album. From the moment "Down on the Street" begins, it's already hard to believe that this came out in 1970 - and there's even a song titled "1970" to remind you how ahead of its time it is. And the second half of this album is the artsiest that punk rock has ever been, creating what sounds like jazz from the depths Hell.
The looseness of the concept of Ziggy Stardust makes it leave out the pretentiousness of many prog albums and it makes it go all in on fun. Ziggy Stardust feels like it exists in its own world, one that is both entrancing and a great time to be in.
No matter how many times I hear it, the ending of the title track still gives me chills every time. There's a consistent beauty throughout this album, especially on its first and last track, the two halves of "Shine on You Crazy Diamond," but everything in between is amazing as well.
Almost 80 minutes of cheesy but great blues albums. Something I love about it is how much it wears its heart on its sleeve. It's rare to find music that's this genuine and just lets it all out as much as this, regardless of whether or not it's cheesy. I don't know if there's ever been anything as blissful as the coda of "Layla."
I have the American version titled Boys Don't Cry which includes their singles and is closer to the album Robert Smith wanted to make had he had a say (which he didn't with the U.K. release). It's filled with one to two minute catchy post-punk songs and at a brief thirty minutes there isn't a track wasted.
Everything the Beach Boys did after Pet Sounds is insanely underrated, and Surf's Up is the best of these albums - and at times, I feel it's nearly as good as Pet Sounds. It was just before Brian Wilson went off the deep end mentally, but that doesn't affect it here, as this album is much more his brothers' than his, and at this point they'd grown into great songwriters. At a brief 30 minutes, every second of this album is psychedelic pop perfection.
Did You Give the World Some Love Today Baby is a Swedish album that was (and mostly still is) very obscure and completely forgotten until Madlib sampled a track from it, but it's one of my personal favorites.
The first time I heard the track "You Never Come Closer," I assumed it was a song from some random modern alternative rock band, but my ass got blown off when I realized it was 1970. Of course there was plenty of psychedelic rock at that point, but something about this song sounded indescribably modern. When this album isn't admirable in its weirdness, it's pop perfection on tracks like "Mama Didn't Lie."
Meddle is as underrated as Pink Floyd album can be (sooo... not very underrated) and while the 20+ minute epic "Echoes" gets talked about a lot, the first side really doesn't get enough appreciation. "Fearless" and "San Tropez" are underappreciated peaceful beauties while "Seamus" has become a solid meme over at PinkFloydCircleJerk.
Roxy Music's first album without Brian Eno was their best at that point (merely by coincidence though). It keeps up the quirkiness and offers better individual songs like "Street Life" and "Mother of Pearl." The Brian Eno-esque "Amazona" proves they're just fine without him.
Acabou Chorare is an incredibly chill and fun album from a group of Brazilian hippies with some amazing musicianship. I don't really have as much to say about it because I don't speak Portuguese and I obviously can't understand anything they're saying, but it's a personal favorite.
Parallel Lines is filled with banger after banger and serves as a bit of bridge between their early punkish rock music and their later new wave. I know it's been said but "Heart of Glass" is such a fucking great song.
Young Americans is Bowie's "Plastic Soul" album. Though Bowie does have better work than this, I have a bit of childhood nostalgia for it due to two songs from it ("Somebody up There Likes Me" and "Fascination") being in my two favorite games from my childhood (GTA: San Andreas and GTA IV). Bowie definitely does soul music justice.
Led Zeppelin IV is Zep's least weird album, which is a slight knock against it, but the conventional classic rock radio staples that are here like "Black Dog" and "Rock and Roll" are timeless, though I could do without ever hearing them again. While the seven to eight minute epics "Stairway to Heaven" and "When the Levee Breaks" get the most love, it's the hopeful folk ballad "Going to California" that is the best song here.
Being all over the place stylisticly sometimes keeps it from being cohesive but its wonderful weirdness makes it always great. Of course we've all heard "Bohemian Rhapsody" a million times but the second best song here, Brian May's "'39" is a gem.
The statement "I've had a rough night and I hate the fuckin' Eagles" is the one thing I disagree with the Dude on. Yeah, they're fucking lame for the most part, but they were always a singles band and I'll be damned if pop rock gets any better than "One of These Nights" or "Take it Easy" or "Lyin' Eyes."
Any discussion about "The most ahead of their time albums ever made" is futile when this album exists. It sounds like Joy Division before Joy Division, but if Joy Division was from the future. First Iggy Pop makes the blueprint for punk rock, then he makes the blueprint for gothic and industrial rock, then he makes the blueprint for the alternative rock scene that wouldn't happen for another twenty years. What the fuck? You can't convince me Iggy didn't have a time machine.
Autobahn is the album where Kraftwerk finally went face first into electronic music, and the result is one of the most revolutionary albums ever made. Despite its repetitiveness, it's always interesting.
Widely recognized as the first glam rock album, Electric Warrior is an album that doesn't sound very 1971 - at all. But this album is more than just insanely influential, it's also filled with fucking great songs like the first three tracks and the classic "Bang a Gong."
With every song on Boston being as overplayed as they are, it's easy to forget how good every song on it is. "More Than a Feeling" still makes me feel all fuzzy after all these years.
I don't know if there's a song as a beautiful as Tea for the Tillerman's penultimate track "Father and Son." Every time I hear it it makes me feel, ya know? Good shit - the whole album that is.
Black Sabbath may have come first, but Paranoid came out just few months later and did everything Black Sabbath did but better. It's heavier, more Sabbathy, has better songwriting, and most of all, has better songs, with "War Pigs," "Paranoid," and "Iron Man" being some of the most badass songs ever written.
Despite its minimalism Another Green World manages to be hypnotic. The vast majority of electronic albums albums from this time sound dated as fuck, but Another Green World still sounds like it was made in 2020. When the best parts of an album aren't even Phil Collins on drums and Robert Fripp on guitar, you know it's fucking great. Also, can I say I fucking love that cover art? 'Cause I love that cover art.
Often a little too anthemic for my tastes, which is why Nebraska is my favorite Springsteen album. Nevertheless, this album always feels genuine and is still consistently great and "Born to Run" was my favorite song at one point.

Entry-ish level gaming build

Hiya lads and lasses (and anything in between or outside, I'm not judging).
The scenario is as follows: my partner wants/needs a new PC (and when I say "need", I really mean it - she's currently running a 10 years-old prebuilt or something along those lines. Not even powerful enough to upgrade to W10 now that Microsoft has dropped W7 support). She wanted to look around for a new prebuilt, but I managed to convince her that you can generally get more bang for your buck if you don't go prebuilt.
Thing is, this is only my first time putting together a build as well. I've been following this sub for a while now as I'm planning on building my own PC for the first time near the release of Cyberpunk 2077 (which means I've just gotten a green light to wait for the next gen of GPUs I guess, with CP2077 being delayed and all). I'd like to think I've gathered a decent understanding of PC parts, but most of you are likely much more experienced in this regard, hence why I want to ask you guys for any suggestions with regards to the build down below.
Some relevant info: my partner's not historically a gamer, but she wants to try getting into it a bit (not 'hardcore' games like FPSs and esports, but more along the lines of simulation, sandbox and strategy I guess. And running people over in GTA. Currently her favourite games are The Sims 4 and GTA: San Andreas). As she's not a hardcore gamer, she doesn't feel the need to go 1440p 144Hz - as long as she can run games on decent settings at 1080p 60Hz for the next 5 years or so, she's content. Furthermore, she likes watching YouTube-videos and just wants the PC to be able to handle general productivity (but any decent PC should be able to handle that well). She also wants an official paid license of Windows 10 (I know not everyone is a fan of that over here, but still), and for the PC to be assembled by the store (as I've got two left hands and no prior building experience, and she just feels safer with the shop warranty on top of the factory warranty). The Windows 10 and assembly by the store are non-negotiable, but any suggestions with regards to the parts is more than welcome.
In bullet points (with some additional points):
  • Entry-ish level gaming build, mainly for simulation, sandbox and strategy games;
  • Being able to run newer titles on decent settings at 1080p 60Hz for the next ~5 years is good enough, no need for ultra 1440p 144Hz;
  • PC should be able to handle watching YouTube-videos and general productivity;
  • Windows 10 license and assembly by the store are non-negotiable, any other parts are up for suggestions;
  • She absolutely wants no RGB and no glass/acrylic panels on the case. I know the mobo has RGB but if I've read correctly, I should be able to ask the store to just not connect the RGB-cable (right?). Other parts are RGB-less I think;
  • I've added a WiFi card as she currently lives at home and has no ethernet cable running to her PC. Might run an ethernet cable once we've found our own place, but for now, wireless is the way to go. Picked a bit more expensive card as few things are more annoying than unstable internet;
  • Added an extra case fan as the case had room for one extra 120mm fan, it's a cheap and quiet fan, and I guess it's nice to have two intakes in the front and one exhaust in the back;
  • Location is The Netherlands, and all the parts will be bought at a store called 'Alternate' - they won't assemble a PC with parts from different stores, so we're kinda locked to the parts they have (though they luckily have a decent catalog).
I've recreated the parts list as well as I could on PCPartPicker:
PCPartPicker Part List

Two differences I've noticed are that I've currently picked the 3-pin version of the be quiet! fan rather than the PWM version (PCPP doesn't have the 3-pin version), and the motherboard I've chosen is the GIGABYTE AORUS B450 PRO (rev. 1.0) socket AM4 (can't find the non-WiFi rev. 1.0 version on PCPP, only the WiFi one, but 'my' store doesn't have that one in their catalog, sadly).
The current selection of parts is the absolute top of what she wants to spend, so I'm mainly looking for ways to get more bang for her buck, either by keeping the same performance but lowering the price, or by getting more performance out of the same budget.
Thank you very much in advance!
