Hitman: Codename 47 has not stood the test of time.

Hitman: Codename 47 was released back in 2000, when the dominant stealth games of the time were Thief and Metal Gear Solid. Reading the descriptions of the game you'd be forgiven for thinking that it was a game way ahead of its time. It boasts of innovative problem solving, AI that redefines what it means to be a 'thinking shooter', and multiple paths to completion. The reality, however, ends up being a lot more banal, with each feature awkwardly sagging independently of one another. It never comes together into a truly dynamic stealth problem solving game, which is unfortunate, because I think that the spirit of the experience is potentially there.
I think the first thing that needs to be pointed out is the sheer gap in quality between the two great levels and the rest of the game. The Lee Hong Assasination and Traditions of the Trade are exactly how I imagined a primitive Hitman level might look like. You have an overall target in a large sprawling level that requires you to require multiple mini objectives to succeed. You wander around, steal a uniform, wander around some more, and try to figure out what to do. This is Hitman at its best, when its almost like a puzzle game. Traditions of the Trade, in particular, does a great job guiding you where to go next through little clues.
In the end the way you progress is still fairly linear, and its more about figuring out how to best interact with the environment, or wear the right uniform in order to get over the next hurdle. You're meant to sneak through this specific window, or stand on this specific balcony, to kill this guy, for example, instead of it being more dynamic. The potential dynamism is also hurt by the combat mechanics being absolutely atrocious - shooting guns is unsatisfying with no feedback and instead of recoil you just get awkward bloom. Getting into an extended gunfight is basically worth restarting the whole mission, unlike in something like MGS V where recovering from discoveries is half the fun.
That being said, If Hitman was mostly composed of missions like this I would be able to recommend it. Its clunky and awkward and is fairly restrictive, but the uniform mechanic in a stealth game is a lot of fun, and the problem solving aspect gives a unique take on the genre. But alas...I've only talked about two missions of the thirteen that make up the game.
The first couple of missions are short and simple - and that's fine, it makes sense that the game would ramp up to the bigger levels. But its past the Hong Kong levels, when you get to the jungle, that the game goes from OK to complete garbage. You're in a huge and foggy jungle, and you basically run around the map with an M60, gunning down everyone you see. We have somehow transitioned from a stealth game to a terrible third person shooter where you can't actually see anything. The second jungle mission is just killing a pig to sneak past a tiger, and the third mission has the most obnoxious beggining you can imagine, forcing you to run around a wire fence for a full minute before you can get in a compound. When you're in there, you're forced into a terrible boss fight and then get shot at from guard towers all around that you can barely see. Oh, and this game has no regenerating health or medpacks - you get an extra life that's largely useless since you don't respawn with kevlar.
There are similar shootouts in the dock levels, where clever puzzle solving is replaced with gunning down hoons in unsatisfying brawls. The real problem is that there is no real way to distinguish between when the game wants you to be clever, and when the game wants you to go all gung ho and spray your smg at 4 soldiers. So you end up wandering around, trying to find the obscure solution to a puzzle that doesn't even exist.
Ultimately, it feels like Hitman has no clear vision for the kind of game it wants to be. I don't mind cheesy third person shooters - Max Payne is fantastic! I love stealth games - Thief is one of the best games I've played in recent times. But Hitman wants to be a puzzle game, a stealth game and an action game all at once, and it kind of fails at all three. Most damning of all though, is that Hitman doesn't really offer anything of value when you compare it to the new Hitman games. Usually when I play these retro games I can identify at least one thing that made it stand out next to modern titles. But the truth is Hitman 2 is basically what the original Hitman: Codename 47 wanted to be, featuring more dynamic gameplay and clever integration of the 'story' moments into the sandbox it situates you in.
I can't recommend this game to anyone in good faith. Play a newer Hitman game, or just play Thief! I will say that it at least has a really good soundtrack that sets the atmosphere beautifully, but that's about all that elevates it beyond mediocrity. If you must play it despite my warnings, I highly recommend at least following the steam guide to get widescreen, increase draw distance and improve the highly suspicious controls. There is no fix for the atrocious FOV without using a cheat engine, so get used to seeing only 60 degrees at a time.
Some old games have stood the test of time, but this is unfortunately not one of them.
