Should I update my 1.5.2 game to 1.7.10? Is it worth it?
My main reason for having the desire to go to 1.7.10 is the vast wealth of mods available for this version. Seriously it blows my mind, by some estimates there are THREE TIMES the mods available for 1.7.10 than any other version, going by the Not Enough Mods listing. 1000+, compared to the hundreds on other versions: older and newer. It's a whole different ballgame, an order of magnitude difference nothing else comes close to 1.7.10 and as a big fan of modded Minecraft I feel I am cheating myself if I don't play this version for real:

The other big mod I used on 1.5.2 was MCPC+ which was amazing, expanding the server compatibility to plugins. I didn't need the server optimizations because I only play by myself and occasionally my buddy but having the option to expand the game by adding plugins was fun. I understand since then there are now more projects, Cauldron, KCauldron, Thermos, for 1.7.10 or later.
...or later. This infinite update treadmill has put me off updating in the past, but now that 98% of the mods I care about seemed to converge on 1.7.10 the planets aligned, but post-1.7.10 is in disarray by my judgement. Painstakingly gathering the "latest compatible version" for the 100 or so 1.5.2 mods I am using now, this is the result (approximate, this was only from a cursory search, but I believe it to be representative):

I've read many theories why we reached a cliff at 1.7.10, probably all have some truth to them. A nonzero number of modders even made an explicit decision to stay on 1.7.10, for various reasons. Reika from RotaryCraft has an excellent thread on this topic in this subreddit. I also enjoy Immibis's mods, even though they don't get much love in FTB packs, they work well and I am familiar with their operation and they are all available up until 1.7.10.
Feed The Beast also has some excellent modpacks for 1.7.10, my impression is Feed The Beast Infinity Evolved (FTB:IE) may very well be the best all-around pack from FTB yet. If not the #1 best, at least among the top. For comparison I based my 1.5.2 world around Feed The Beast Unleashed and Unhinged. Built it from scratch, as I enjoy the meta-game of modpack creation, but inspired by both these packs and used most mods from them, except those I did not care for. Copiously used the Feed The Beast wiki, since I shared lots of its mods. And I blissfully played this game ignoring 1.6.4 and Feed The Beast Monster, the next kitchen-sink pack. And I ignored 1.7.10, until now, which is home to FTB:IE and Resurrection and other appealing non-FTB packs like Beyond Reality and Test Pack Please Ignore 2. IE in particular seems to have had the benefit of being introduced near the tail-end of 1.7.10 where mods have stabilized and content wrapped up. The change log on Curse shows FTB Infinity Evolved was updated to version 2.7.1 just yesterday!
I hear chatter about this month's latest Minecraft version release, 1.12, having the potential to become "the next 1.7.10". We will see, but the enormous conglomeration of content on 1.7.10 I can no longer afford to ignore. There are more modding tutorials also available for 1.7.10, maybe I'll try my hand at modding helping to expand this space further, contributing back to this community which has freely given us so much. Adding more fuel to this train with no brakes. If I do update, my plan is to stay on 1.7.10 indefinitely, keeping the same long-term world for years: but a new world from 1.5.2, because Applied Energistics to Applied Energistics 2 and GregTech 3 to GregTech 5 would break most of my base, it is too different, so I intend to keep a parallel server on 1.5.2 and start anew with 1.7.10, something I've never done before. And this is a great opportunity to remove mods I tired of in 1.5.2, though I have the option to re-add them since 98% (of mods I had) are ported to 1.7.10, but 1.7.10 adds tons of new mods, too. I am most salivating at the mouth for the realistic incarnations of industrial technologies in Immersive Engineering, the bases people post here are what gave me Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) and prompted this investigation into getting into 1.7.10. Of course, IE is updated to 1.11.2 but it also has a stable 1.7.10 version.
Long story short, my conclusion in updating from 1.5.2 to 1.7.10 is nearly all upside with minimal downside. I'll miss my old world but expect I'll enjoy the new mods more, and the added stability and new and exciting content.
In writing this post, I convinced myself, 1.7.10 is clearly the way to go. It seems so obvious with the facts clearly laid out. But I appreciate anyone's thoughts on the matter, any other pro's to 1.7.10 I must check out or unforeseen pitfalls with abandoning the shackles of 1.5.2.
