Background: Cybersecurity consultant from the last 7 years, most of my experience from domains 1, 2, 6 and 7. CRISC, CISM, ISO 27001 LA, ITIL and COBIT certifications already held. Not native english speaker, sorry for misspellings. Any questions (except exam questions lol) please send me a message! I'd be more than grateful to help, also I speak spanish.
I used A LOT of resources, from random youtube videos, wikipedia, webpages, notes from friends, etc. everytime I found one topic I didn't understand I just google it, but here are my rating for the most popular materials.
OSG 8th edition (9/10): You should use it as the foundation material, there's no doubt about that, read it cover to cover once. What I didn't like were some topics that are not well explained (like Kerberos, SAML, GDPR, etc), and you MUST look for other resources.
AIO 8th edition & CBK 5th edition (7/10): Use it as a reference for important topics you don't understand clearly, don NOT read it cover to cover.
11th Hour CISSP 3rd edition (10/10): You should only read this book at two moments, when starting your studies to have an overview of the exam and 1 week before your exam to refresh all material.
Sunflower PDF (6/10): Didn't work for me, disorganized information. Your own notes are the best friend at the end.
The Memory Palace PDF 2nd edition (9/10): Nice summary of the OSG with key topics, used it 2 days before my exam.
CISSP Review Course, ISC2 (9/10): During this pandemic times, I got an email to access this mini review course from ISC2, not sure if is still free but it has a brief description of the domains along with several questions at the end and an assessment. It was very basic but questions were good and with the same mindset for the exam.
Understanding Cryptography by Christof Paar, Jan Pelzl (9/10): I was having difficulties with cryptography, this book is TOO much for the exam but if you need to face this topic you need solid foundation before, helped me feel confident that cryptography is not that hard, in fact was of my favorite topics at the end of my studies.
How to think like a manager, Luke Ahmed (10/10): This is the right mindset for the exam, 25 most common questions from every domain explaining how to answer correctly.
Adam Gordon free bootcamp (10/10): I was lucky to be on the 2 free bootcamps from this master guy, and one of the benefits from being in the discord community.
Certification Station (Discord group) (11/10): A massive community with professionals willing to pass CISSP and many other certifications, a MUST join. https://discord.com/invite/certstation
Destination Certification videos (11/10): A series of mindmaps videos from all domains made by the awesome guys John Berti and Rob Witcher.
Official Practice Tests (9/10): I found them really helpful, the problem is the real exam questions are not straightforward, you'll find questions with BEST, FIRST, MOST, LEAST. Use it to reinforce your knowledge.
Boson (8/10): Questions are just too technical and unlikely to be on the real exam but explanations are extremely good in general and will make you be over prepared (which is better).
CISSP Practice Exam AIO 5th edition (10/10): Good, this questions will make you think hard with the right weight for technical and management perspective.
IT Dojo Questions (10/10): His questions and explanations helped me a lot. YouTube Channel.
General questions (?/10): Look for quality questions out there, the ones where ALL the choices could be correct but you need to pick the BEST. The ones who mix 2 domains in one question (e.g. an incident response question with BCP/DRP answers) the real exam will throw you those.
-The Exam & Tips-
- I was extremely nervous, I knew is gonna be hard but you have to take the exam at some time. Just before entering the testing center I watched the Why you will pass the CISSP most famous video, GET THE MINDSET before entering.
- I ran very fast from my car to the testing center (or make some jumps) just to get blood to your head and be prepared. Do it.
- The exam is NOT technical, I memorized key sizes, formulas, cables, wireless technologies but not even a single question of them.
- Think like a manager (when the question asks for it). Probably the best tip for your studies is to think about the RISK. You'll find many laws but what is the overall risk we need to learn from that? what's the main goal? to know every country has its own laws and regulations and we have to look for them to protect privacy. You'll face incidents and breaches scenarios, and you have phases and many control suggestions, THINK before act, you must first confirm it is an incident, document and gather information BEFORE taking any action.
- Know GDPR, BCP/DRP, Risk Management, roles for owner and custodians and access control models (MAC, DAC, RBAC, etc). Do not struggle with key sizes in cryptography, cables, etc. Technologies changes, security doesn't, as a CISSP you must be able to face any situation today and in the future with the foundations (risks).
- After question 100 I breathe deeply and hit next, QUESTION 101! F** I knew I wasn't doing that bad so I took a break, went for water and came back. The exam knew I failed a couple of access control questions and security operations scenarios, It gave me 5 more questions which I found easy and at 105 it stopped. I knew I have passed.
