restic is a backup program focused on simplicity—so it's more likely those planned backups actually happen. Easy to both configure and use, fast and verifiable. Uses cryptography to guarantee confidentiality and integrity of the data. Assumes backup data is stored in an untrusted environment, so it encrypts your data with AES-256 in counter mode and authenticates using Poly1305-AES. Additional snapshots only take the storage of the actual increment and duplicate data is de-duplicated before it is written to the storage backend to save space. Lets you tune various parameters related to timing, buffers and protocols (TCP, UDP, SCTP with IPv4 and IPv6). Be aware this newer implementation shares no code with the original iPerf and is not backwards compatible. Credit for this one goes to Moubai.
LatencyMon analyzes the possible causes of buffer underruns by measuring kernel timer latencies and reporting DPC/ISR excecution times and hard pagefaults. It provides a comprehensible report and identifies the kernel modules and processes behind audio latencies that result in drop outs. It also provides the functionality of an ISR monitor, DPC monitor and a hard pagefault monitor. Requires Windows Vista or later. Appreciation to aberugg who tells us, "LatencyMon will check all sorts of info down to what driveprocess might be the culprit. It will help you narrow it down even more. This tool helped me realize that Windows 10's kernel is terrible in terms of device latency when compared to previous versions."
GNU parallel is a shell tool for executing jobs—like a single command or a small script that has to be run for each of the lines in the input—in parallel on one or more computers. Typical input is a list of files, hosts, users, URLs or tables. A job can also be a command that reads from a pipe, which can then be split and piped into commands in parallel. Velenux finds it "handy to split jobs when you have many cores to use."

CLCL is a free, clipboard caching utility that supports all clipboard formats. Features a customizable menu. According to JediMasterSeamus, this clipboard manager "saves so much time. And you can save templates for quick responses or frequently typed stuff."
Desktop Info displays system information on your desktop, like wallpaper, but stays in memory and updates in real time. Can be great for walk-by monitoring. Recommended by w1llynilly, who says, "It has 2 pages by default for metrics about the OS and the network/hardware. It is very lightweight and was recommended to me when I was looking for BGInfo alternatives."
True Ping is exactly the same as the standard ping program of Windows 9x, NT and 2000—except that it does a better job calculating the timing. It uses a random buffer (that changes at every ping) to improve performance. Thanks to bcahill for this one, who says, it "... can send pings very fast (hundreds per second). This is very helpful when trying to diagnose packet loss. It very quickly shows if packet loss is occurring, so I can make changes and quickly see the effect."
Parted Magic is a hard disk management solution that includes tools for disk partitioning and cloning, data rescue, disk erasing and benchmarking with Bonnie++, IOzone, Hard Info, System Stability Tester, mprime and stress. This standalone Linux operating system runs from a CD or USB drive, so nothing need be installed on the target machine. Recommended by Aggietallboy.
mbuffer is a tool for buffering data streams that offers direct support for TCP-based network targets (IPv4 and IPv6), the ability to send to multiple targets in parallel and support for multiple volumes. It features I/O rate limitation, high-/low-watermark-based restart criteria, configurable buffer size and on-the-fly MD5 hash calculation in an efficient, multi-threaded implementation. Can help extend drive motor life by avoiding buffer underruns when writing to fast tape drives or libraries (those drives tend to stop and rewind in such cases). Thanks to zorinlynx, who adds, "If you move large streams from place to place, for example with "tar" or "zfs send" or use tape, mbuffer is awesome. You can send a stream over the network with a large memory buffer at each end so that momentary stalls on either end of the transfer don't reduce performance. This especially helps out when writing to tapes, as the tape drive can change directions without stopping the flow of data."
TeraCopy is a tool for copying files faster and more securely while preserving data integrity. Gives you the ability to pause/resume file transfers, verify files after copy, preserve date timestamps, copy locked files, run a shell script on completion, generate and verify checksum files and delete files securely. Much more stable, quicker transfers, crash tolerant and adds features like 'No-to-all' and 'yes-to-all' for comparing folders."
MultiDesk & MultiDeskEnforcer are a combination of a tabbed remote desktop client (terminal services client) and a service that limits connections to only those that provide the correct shared secret (keeps hackers from accessing your server via RDP even if they have the correct password). Suggested by plazman30 as being "[s]imilar to Microsoft's RDP Manager, [b]ut doesn't need to be installed and has tabs across the top, instead of the side."
The PsTools suite includes command-line utilities for listing the processes running on local or remote computers, running processes remotely, rebooting computers, dumping event logs, and more. FYI: Some anti-virus scanners report that one or more of the tools are infected with a "remote admin" virus. None of the PsTools contain viruses, but they have been used by viruses, which is why they trigger virus notifications.
Mosh is a remote terminal application that allows roaming, supports intermittent connectivity, and provides intelligent local echo and line editing of user keystrokes. A Comprehensive Guide to Playing Silent Hill 2 on macOS Catalina (and Windows too!)

A Comprehensive Guide to Playing Silent Hill 2 on macOS Catalina (and Windows too!)

After many hours of wandering through internet threads and forums, I found plenty of people clamouring Silent Hill 2 is the greatest game of all time but not many explaining how the hell you're actually supposed to play Silent Hill 2, an much less so on MacOS Catalina, considering the removal of 32-bit support. Most suggestions were 'buy a PS2, then buy the game off eBay at an exorbitantly inflated price'. So, I worked with what I had and compiled a guide on how to run Silent Hill 2 on macOS Catalina. (Or any computer you may have that runs Windows 10). And trust me, despite all the shit you have to go through, Silent Hill 2 is a damn good game.
Important & Background Info
  • Wine doesn't run as a 64-bit program at this stage, and any workaround I found tended to be unreliable, and would change with every update to Catalina.
  • PS2 emulators are also off the table, since they require a Wineskin to run on newer versions of macOS.
  • If you're already running Windows 10 on a laptop or PC, you can skip to the 'Installing Silent Hill 2' subheading, and ignore any reference to Virtual Machines.
  • This guide should work on older versions of macOS (though I can't guarantee this) if you don't want to use Wine.
  • I've attached a video for those of you that prefer visual guides. I'd recommend it when installing the Enhanced Edition files.
  • You'll need least 35 GB of storage space, though 40GB-45GB is optimal. Check the notes at the bottom of the post for a useful app to free up storage.
  • The games files are located at: This PC/Local Disk (C:)/Program Files (x86)/Konami/Silent Hill 2/ All Enhanced Edition files are to be installed here too.
My Specs
  • MacBook Air (Early 2015)
  • Processor: 1.6 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
  • Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
  • Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 6000 1536 MB

Installing the Required Software

  1. Download the 64-bit Windows 10 iso from https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10ISO.
  2. Download VMFusion 11.5 from https://www.vmware.com/au/products/fusion/fusion-evaluation.html. To any of you who are familiar with virtual machines, you'll probably wonder 'why not VirtualBox?' Despite being good as a basic virtual machine, VirtualBox has serious issues running Silent Hill 2. Constant texture glitches after cutscenes, the flashlight not working, lens flare breaking the game, menus breaking, etc. I have tried many, many times to fix these issues, but to no avail. So, VMware is the next best thing, and even though the trial only lasts 30 days, there is a very easy workaround listed near the bottom of this post.
  3. Open VMware Fusion and install it into applications. You’ll need to enable specific settings when prompted. These are in Security and Privacy, and involve enabling some accessibility features and some other things, but the launcher will instruct you on what to do. Agree to the license, then choose the 30-day free trial for VMware Fusion. You don't need the Professional version, so just pick the standard. An installation window will pop up, click continue. The game may detect the Windows 10 ISO in your downloads folder, but if not, select 'Use another disc or image', navigate to your downloads folder and select the ISO. On the next page, make sure the 'easy install' box is ticked, name your account, make a password if you want, then select Windows 10 Home. Once you've hit continue, you'll be recommended to enter a product key. Ignore that and continue without key. On the next page, choose 'more isolated' for integration and hit continue again.
  4. Click on 'customise settings' to rename you Windows 10 VM and choose it's save location. After clicking save you'll be brought into a settings menu. Go to Hard Disk (SCSI), and make sure you allocate at least 35gB, though you can change this value in future. Click 'show all' to back out of the Hard Disc menu, then go Processors & Memory. I opted for 2 of 4 processor cores and 5120MB of my 8192MB RAM, though this may differ depending on your specs. Back out of the Processors menu, then go to Display. Make sure the Accelerate 3D Graphics option is ticked. My shared graphics memory was set to 1024MB (recommended), but I found setting this to 3072MB improved performance greatly, but this isn't shown in the video. Exit the settings menu and click the play button on your Virtual Machine. And thanks to easy install you don't have to go through the manual setup of Windows 10, as it will be done automatically!
  1. (Inside of your Virtual Machine) In order to activate dark mode and personalise Windows without an activation key, here is a workaround: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfSoCdU2Lyk. To change your background, go into internet explorer, find an image, right-click on it and select 'change desktop background'.
  2. (Inside of your Virtual Machine) If you have an 'Activate Windows 10' watermark at any point, go to https://downloadappsforfree.com/how-to-remove-activate-windows-10-watermark-2019/ and use method 2.

Installing Silent Hill 2 (Inside your Virtual Machine)

  1. Now to install the game! Download Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams from https://www.myabandonware.com/game/silent-hill-2-restless-dreams-bgd. If you’re concerned about the safety of the website feel free to do your own research (caution is a good thing after all), but MyAbandonware is very well reputed and won't redirect you to an external site to download the file which is both safer and easier for those who are unsure. It’s the safest site that currently distributes Silent Hill 2, but you can obtain a copy elsewhere if you’d prefer. You'll notice that there's a patch, fix and NOCD download, but you won't be needing those.
  2. Unzip your download, in which there should be a folder labeled Silent Hill 2 ISO. This folder should contain 3 CD files. Double click on each individual CD to mount them, or right click on each of them and select 'mount'. Then go into CD1, and locate the program setup.exe. This should launch an installation wizard. Agree to the license, don't change anything for the install location, and choose to install the movies on hard disk. This will guarantee the best performance. Don't change the program installation location either, so click next, and the installation will begin. At ~27% the wizard will ask you to insert disc 2. Click 'browse', which will bring up a selection menu of your mounted discs. Assuming you have mounted the CDs, you should see 3 Silent Hill 2 CDs. Select the one titled 'DVD Drive SH2_CD2'. Hit OK, then OK again, and the installation will resume. When prompted for CD3, select 'DVD Drive SH2_CD3'. The installation will then finish and request you insert disk 1, so select 'DVD Drive SH2_CD1'. The game will then ask if you want to install DirectX 8.1. SELECT NO. Do not install DirectX 8.1. Click yes when asked if you want to shortcut Silent Hill 2, then finish the installation, which will restart your computer.
  3. On the shortcut of Silent Hill 2 on your desktop, right-click on it go to properties>compatibility, and check the box that says 'Run as administrator'. Apply the settings then exit.

Installing Enhanced Edition Files (Inside Virtual Machine)

  1. Don't bother trying to run the game yet, because it flat-out won't launch. Instead, go to http://www.enhanced.townofsilenthill.com/SH2/install.htm. Download the files from listed from step 2-7 This provides fixes and enhancements to the game, and greatly improves the overall experience. The website gives direct instruction on how to install the game, but you can view the video attached if you're unsure of the installation. Begin the installation from STEP 2, and don't bother creating a backup of the sh2pc.exe. Additionally, if you're wondering where \Silent Hill 2\ is as mentioned on the website, that location can be found at This PC>Local Disk>Program Files (x86)>Konami>Silent Hill 2. I will refer to this location as the 'game files'.
  2. Install DirectX from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35, and Microsoft Visual C++ from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5555. I'm not going to bother putting these in the video since they're both official Microsoft products and have very straightforward installations.
  3. Right click on each of the zip folders and click extract. You can delete the zip files and begin to move the contents of each folder into the games files. Check the video for the correct installation. If there is a folder labelled SILENT HILL 2 don't move in the folder itself. Go into the folder and move the contents into the game files. You'll also be asked to replace lots of files, so hit continue for all of those.
  4. I opted not not install Reshade and Filters (Step 8 of EnhancedTownofSilentHill) because I have an integrated graphics card, but feel free to try it for yourself. I haven't bothered trying to connect a controller either, but you can try to see if that works if you want to. Keyboard worked just fine for me though.
  5. Click on the shortcut, click 'yes' when asked if you want to run the program as admin, and the game will launch!

How to extend VMware Fusion use

Option 1: For a sophisticated piece of software, VMware Fusion has a REALLY stupid free trial system. YOU CAN EXTEND THE FREE TRIAL BY CHANGING THE DATE ON YOUR MAC. I'm not joking. You have a piece of software that's worth a fair amount of money, but you get it for free indefinitely by changing the date. I even fast forwarded the time by a month, tried to launch it, and it informed me my trial had ended and prompted me to buy a key. Quit the app, changed the date back to normal, launched the app, and boom, I'm back to having 29 days remaining on my trial. However, you can only wind it back to a max of 31 days, otherwise you'll be informed your free trial has ended. I also wouldn't recommend changing the date when VMware itself is open. If you don't want to change the time for whatever reason, there's another workaround which involves uninstallation and reinstallation of the game monthly (Though this option is considerably easier).
Option 2: Download Mac App Cleaner from https://nektony.com/mac-app-uninstaller, then delete the VMware program. This will delete all files related to the program, but not the VM itself. Reinstall from the VMware Launcher as normal. Once installed, don't create a new VM. Instead, click and hold on VMware in the dock and select, 'Virtual Machine Library'. Then in your menu bar go to Go>Computer>Macintosh HD>User>{Your Account Name}. There should be a folder titled 'Virtual Machines'. Inside of it should be your virtual machine named 'Windows 10 VM' or whatever else you named it. Drag this into your virtual machine library and you free trial period has been restored! You can also buy VMware from its official website.

If you're running low on storage like I was, CleanMyMacX from MacPaw is pretty useful if you use the space lens scanner, which gives you a nice overview of all files on your disc. It will bug you buy an activation key though, which can be pretty annoying. https://macpaw.com/cleanmymac
  • There are reports of more than one core causing sound looping. Whilst the patches from EnhancedTownofSilentHill should fix this, setting your core count to one in the VMware settings should fix the problem.
  • Sometimes the audio crackles and pops, or the cutscene will slow down so the audio can catch up. There's not really a fix for this, but I found closing other apps that use significant energy can help, or try running the game at a lower resolution. The lip-syncing was never originally perfect, so don't worry about that.
  • In the menubar when running VMware, select 'view' then switch from unity to single-window if your virtual machine launches but doesn't show the display.
  • If ever Silent Hill 2 freezes, you can try the right command button to bring up the windows menu to open task manager, but I found this to be somewhat unreliable. Another solution is in the menubar, select Virtual Machine, and find the the 'send ctrl-alt-del option, then restart the VM.
Despite all this grief you have to go through to play the game, it really is worth it, because even now, the game is so good, and it's disgraceful that you can only obtain the shitty versions on modern gen consoles. If anyone finds this useful, I'd be happy to make further guides on Silent Hill 1, 3 and 4, and also Unreal PT.
Let me know if you have any questions, or if there's anything I should change!
